Since men began sailing the high seas, there have been pirates.  History records the exploits of Blackbeard, and William Kidd to name a few. However how about the remarkable women pirates who achieved the impossible feat of earning the respect of their male counterparts.  What is recorded in history about them?

Mary Read was born in England in the late 17^th century.  After the death of her older brother, Mary began dressing as a boy so that she and her mother could maintain financial support.   As she grew, her male persona grew with her, and she eventually made her way to the join the British military.  She became a pirate when her ship was overtaken by pirates, and she was forced to become one of them. It is estimated that she was in her late twenties at the height of her piracy activities.

Holding her own in battle, her male guise was not suspect; however, eventually she revealed her female identity to the crew and was accepted as such.  Mary Read experienced love, and lived life to the fullest as a woman pirate pillaging and plundering the Caribbean until her demise in a Jamaican prison in 1721.

Interestingly enough, Anne Bonny has history that is linked with Mary Read.  Anne Bonny was born in Ireland.  History puts her date of birth as March 8, 1700 or thereabouts.

Anne was a strong willed girl who grew into an attractive woman with a fiery temperament.  Anne married a pirate by the name of James Bonny and she eventually became a pirate herself.

Unlike Mary, although Anne dressed and took on the persona of a male pirate, her female identity was known by the crew from the start.  Anne Bonny was among the pirates that overtook Read’s ship, and it is written that it was her relationship to Read that forced Read to reveal her feminine identity.  From then on, Mary and Anne would don their male personas for battle, and revert to their true female identities the rest of the time.

Although imprisoned with Read, it is unclear if Bonny was released or executed.  There is some speculation that her father obtained her release, and she went on to live a respectable life to pass at a ripe old age of 82.
